BEIJING – One of the most amazing 24-hour periods in sports history was capped Sunday at the Water Cube when Michael Phelps stood on the top of the Olympic medal podium for the eighth time.
The American swimmer became the first person to win eight gold medals at a single games by teaming with three others to win the 4×100 medley relay.
Phelps swam the butterfly leg, the same event in which he won his seventh gold medal Saturday to tie the record set by Mark Spitz at the 1972 Munich Games.
